Northwestern Mutual of Omaha is the Premier Sponsor for 5th Annual Red Kettle Run

For the fourth year in a row Northwestern Mutual of Nebraska was the premier sponsor for the 2014 Red Kettle 5k Run on October 25th, 2014 at Lake Zornisky.  This was the fifth year for the run/walk which starts the Red Kettle Season for the Salvation Army’s Tree of Lights Campaign.

In past years Northwestern Mutual helped provide 50 volunteers to help people sign in on the day of the race, hand out Northwestern Mutual labeled water bottles, help cheer on runners along the route(and at the end of the race) etc…

Tim Harrison is on the local board for the Salvation Army and states, “Fall and Winter are especially important times for the Salvation Army Food Pantries.  With supplies at their lowest, there is an increase in demand for material assistance.  Our company’s involvement in this event will provide the additional help needed to recruit race participants within the greater Omaha Metropolitan area, as well as provide food desperately needed by many in Omaha that would go without otherwise.”  Last year the Red Kettle Run had 735 participants which helped raise more than 35,000 food items for the food pantry.

“We are so excited to have Northwestern Mutual and Cheeriodicals visit Children’s Hospital & Medical Center today,” said Alyssa DeFrain, Development Officer at Children’s. “We sincerely appreciate Northwestern Mutual Managing Partner, Michael Tews and his team for sponsoring this day of smiles. All of our patients were thrilled to receive such special and fun gifts.”

“We’re excited to work with Northwestern Mutual - Nebraska to bring smiles to every child at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center” said Gary Parisher, President of Cheeriodicals.  “Nothing we do matters more than our efforts in children’s hospitals.”

The boxes were tailored to boys or girls and specific age groups and are sure to bring joy to the children and even included a few surprises for the parents.

"We're thrilled to partner with Cheeriodicals to bring joy to Nebraska families battling cancer and other diseases," said Michael Tews, Managing Partner, Northwestern Mutual-Nebraska. "As a father of four, I can't imagine the heart ache of seeing your child in pain as they battle childhood cancer and other diseases. Our hope is that by bringing a smile to the child, we can bring a smile to the entire family."

Contributing to this day of smiles, Omaha Two Men and a Truck, specializing in residential and commercial moves, donated their time and services to transport the 170 Cheeriodicals to Children’s.

Feeback from the Northwestern Mutual Cheeriodicals Event

"Our son is in Children’s Hospital; we came up from Lincoln; and he received one of the packages from your employees this morning right after he got out of surgery and I just wanted to let Michael and his team know how much it was appreciated.  Our son is 12 he has gone through 9 different surgeries and I just want you to know how much this meant to him that when he woke up he had this beautiful package full of wonderful things for him to do while he is sitting in the hospital bed recovering.  Please pass this on to your team how generous and kind and how much it is appreciated.  We just wanted to say Thank you and please let everyone know."

"My granddaughter just received a box from you, donated by Northwestern Mutual of Nebraska, it was such a day brightener. She has cancer, and is receiving treatment right now, so boy what a way to make her happy. Thank you! "

Steve Forbes and John Schlifske on
"The Power of a Game Plan”

Northwestern Mutual hosted a speaker series with Steve Forbes, chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes Media and John Schlifske, Northwestern Mutual chairman and CEO. As part of an ongoing partnership, Northwestern Mutual and Forbes have spoken about the economy to more than 21,000 people in more than 30 cities since 2010. Approximately 500 people attended the event in Omaha, where Steve and John shared their perspectives on the economy, the financial markets, and the importance of having a sound financial game plan in place, regardless of market conditions. Key insights presented at the events were:
  • Getting to retirement is no longer the end goal - it is a new starting point. Schlifske and Forbes contend that today's economy coupled with increased life expectancy means there is an increased risk for individuals to deplete their assets too soon. A well-rounded plan is essential to help maintain financial security for life.
  • It is unlikely that individuals can solely invest their way to prosperity. Rather, Schlifske and Forbes believe in practicing proven financial principles, such as setting a budget, saving in addition to investing, and dollar-cost averaging for the long-term.
  • There are plans that individuals and business owners can put into place now to help ensure long-term security. Schlifske and Forbes encourage Americans to not let debates keep them from addressing their short- and long-term financial needs.
